July 21-22, 2001

Activity report from Nick:

Museum Ships On the Air weekend summary:

Gary Hendrickson/W3DTN and I operated NK3ST and Ron Polityka/WB3AAL and Ed Morgan/N2AQJ operated a station on the TANEY.  Both stations finished around 2:00 pm Sunday, with NK3ST on the air about 22 hours.  Both stations had around 300 contacts each. TORSK had contacts with: John Love, NZ4QJ, who was an RM on BECUNA 49-53 (NZQJ was BECUNA's callsign); KB4NSB, the USS BANCROFT Submarine Memorial at the King's Bay Sub Base (KB=King's Bay and NSB=Naval Submarine Base); the USS Orleck DD-886 in Orange, TX (returned from Turkish Navy in Aug 2000); a special event station honoring the visit of the USCGC Maple, WLB-207, to Ogdensburg, NY (original Maple, WAGL-234,  was homeported there; this Maple was launched in Dec 2000 and is homeported in Sitka, AK);  The USS Salem, CA-139, in Quincy, MA; Bill Severn, K2JGL, who was an engineman on CHOPPER, SS-342, 50-55 (he recalled the CHOPPER's callsign was NKDO; the USS SLATER, DE-766, in Albany, NY; USS SILVERSIDES, SS-236, in Muskegon, MI; the SS JOHN BROWN just across the harbor; and the USS KIDD, DD-661, in Baton Rouge, LA. We heard the HMCS HAIDA (a Canadian WW2 destroyer) and the station on the USS YORKTOWN, but they couldn't hear us. We knew there were many more ships, including HORNET, PAMPANITO, MISSOURI, WISCONSIN, NEW JERSEY, on the air but couldn't hear any of them. Good weekend all in all and it was good to hear many ships on the air which weren't scheduled. Like the TANEY, some radio operators just got up a head of steam and activated them. This is good for museum ships and good for amateur radio too.
